What is Word Stress?
Word stress means pronouncing one syllable in a word louder, longer, and higher in pitch than the others. Correct stress makes your English sound natural and helps listeners understand you.

Basic Stress Rules
Two-Syllable Words:
- Nouns: Usually stress on FIRST syllable (TAble, APple, WATer)
- Verbs: Usually stress on SECOND syllable (beLIEVE, deCIDE, rePEAT)
Three+ Syllable Words:
- Words ending in -tion, -sion: Stress on syllable BEFORE (inforMAtion, teleVIsion)
- Words ending in -ic: Stress on syllable BEFORE (draMAtic, fanTAStic)
- Words ending in -ty, -ry: Stress on THIRD from end (univerSIty, necesSARy)
