Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous (also called Present Progressive) is used for actions happening right now or temporary situations. In Hindi, this is like "रहा हूं/रही हूं" and in Gujarati "રહ્યો છું/રહી છું".

Structure

Positive: Subject + am/is/are + Verb-ing

Negative: Subject + am/is/are + not + Verb-ing

Question: Am/Is/Are + Subject + Verb-ing?

Rules for Adding -ing:

  • Most verbs: add -ing → playing, eating
  • Verbs ending in -e: remove e, add -ing → making, writing
  • Short verbs (CVC): double last consonant → running, sitting
  • Verbs ending in -ie: change to y, add -ing → die → dying

When to Use Present Continuous

1. Actions Happening Now

  • I am reading a book right now. (मैं अभी किताब पढ़ रहा हूं।)
  • She is cooking dinner. (वह खाना बना रही है।)
  • They are playing football. (वे फुटबॉल खेल रहे हैं।)

2. Temporary Situations

  • I am staying with my friend this week. (मैं इस हफ्ते दोस्त के साथ रह रहा हूं।)
  • He is working from home these days. (वह आजकल घर से काम कर रहा है।)

3. Future Plans (Arranged)

  • I am meeting my friend tomorrow. (मैं कल अपने दोस्त से मिल रहा हूं।)
  • We are leaving for Delhi next Monday. (हम अगले सोमवार दिल्ली जा रहे हैं।)

4. Changing/Developing Situations

  • The weather is getting colder. (मौसम ठंडा हो रहा है।)
  • Prices are rising every day. (कीमतें हर दिन बढ़ रही हैं।)

Time Words Used with Present Continuous

  • now - अभी (I am eating now.)
  • right now - अभी इस समय
  • at the moment - इस समय
  • currently - वर्तमान में
  • today - आज
  • this week/month - इस हफ्ते/महीने

Verbs NOT Used in Continuous

Some verbs (stative verbs) are not normally used in continuous form:

  • Emotions: love, hate, like, want, need
  • Mental: know, believe, understand, remember
  • Senses: see, hear, smell, taste
  • Others: have (possession), belong, contain
