Passive Voice
Passive Voice
In English, sentences can be in active voice or passive voice. In active voice, the subject performs the action. In passive voice, the subject receives the action.
- Active: She writes a letter. (Subject does the action)
- Passive: A letter is written by her. (Subject receives the action)
Passive Voice Structure
Formula: Object + be (conjugated) + past participle + (by + subject)
The "by + subject" part is optional and often omitted.
Passive Voice in Different Tenses

When to Use Passive Voice
- Unknown doer: My wallet was stolen. (We don't know who)
- Obvious doer: The thief was arrested. (by police - obvious)
- Focus on action/object: The Taj Mahal was built in 1653.
- Formal/scientific writing: The experiment was conducted carefully.
- Avoid blame: Mistakes were made. (who made them is avoided)
Converting Active to Passive
Steps:
- Find the object of the active sentence → make it the subject
- Change the verb to "be + past participle"
- Make the active subject the object with "by" (optional)
Example:
- Active: The dog bit the man.
- Object "the man" → Subject
- "bit" → "was bitten"
- Passive: The man was bitten by the dog.
