Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They describe how, when, where, how often, or to what degree an action is performed.

Types of Adverbs

1. Adverbs of Manner (How?)

Describe how an action is done. Usually end in -ly.

  • She sings beautifully. (How does she sing?)
  • He runs quickly.
  • They work carefully.
  • She speaks loudly.

2. Adverbs of Time (When?)

Tell us when an action happens.

  • I will call you tomorrow.
  • She arrived yesterday.
  • They are coming now.
  • I have already finished.

3. Adverbs of Place (Where?)

Tell us where an action happens.

  • Come here.
  • She looked everywhere.
  • The cat is outside.
  • They went abroad.

4. Adverbs of Frequency (How often?)

Tell us how often an action happens.

  • I always wake up early. (100%)
  • She usually walks to work. (80%)
  • They sometimes go to movies. (50%)
  • He rarely eats meat. (20%)
  • I never smoke. (0%)

5. Adverbs of Degree (How much?)

Tell us the intensity or degree.

  • It's very hot today.
  • She is extremely intelligent.
  • The movie was quite interesting.
  • I almost finished.

  • Beginning: Yesterday, I went to the market.
