Phonics

Learn phonics - the relationship between letters and sounds to read and spell words correctly.

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a method of teaching reading by connecting sounds (phonemes) with letters (graphemes). It helps you decode words by understanding which sounds each letter or letter combination makes.

Single Letter Sounds

Each letter has at least one sound. Here are the basic sounds:

Consonant Sounds:

LetterSoundExample Words
B/b/ball, bat, bed
C/k/ or /s/cat, car (k) / city, cell (s)
D/d/dog, dad, door
F/f/fan, fish, fun
G/g/ or /j/go, get (g) / gym, giraffe (j)
H/h/hat, hen, hot
J/j/jam, jet, jump
K/k/kite, key, king
L/l/lion, leg, love
M/m/man, mom, moon

Short and Long Vowel Sounds

Short Vowel Sounds:

  • a = /æ/ as in "cat", "hat", "map"
  • e = /e/ as in "bed", "pen", "red"
  • i = /ɪ/ as in "sit", "pig", "fish"
  • o = /ɒ/ as in "hot", "pot", "dog"
  • u = /ʌ/ as in "cup", "bus", "sun"

Long Vowel Sounds (say the letter name):

  • a = /eɪ/ as in "cake", "name", "game"
  • e = /iː/ as in "me", "she", "be"
  • i = /aɪ/ as in "like", "time", "kite"
  • o = /oʊ/ as in "go", "home", "bone"
  • u = /juː/ as in "use", "cute", "tube"

Consonant Digraphs

Two letters that make ONE sound:

  • ch = /tʃ/ as in "chat", "cheese", "chair"
  • sh = /ʃ/ as in "ship", "shoe", "fish"
  • th = /θ/ or /ð/ as in "think" or "this"
  • wh = /w/ as in "what", "when", "where"
  • ph = /f/ as in "phone", "photo", "elephant"

Blending Sounds

To read a word, blend the sounds together:

c - a - t → /k/ - /æ/ - /t/ → "cat"

s - t - o - p → /s/ - /t/ - /ɒ/ - /p/ → "stop"

ch - i - p → /tʃ/ - /ɪ/ - /p/ → "chip"

Phonics Learning Tips

  1. Start Simple: Begin with CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words like "cat", "dog", "sun"
  2. Practice Blending: Sound out each letter, then blend them together
  3. Learn Patterns: Recognize common letter patterns
  4. Read Aloud: Practice reading simple books out loud
