Verb Basics

Learn what verbs are and how they function as action and state words in English sentences.

What is a Verb?

A verb is a word that shows action or state of being. Every sentence needs at least one verb. Verbs tell us what someone or something does or is.

Types of Verbs

1. Action Verbs (Dynamic Verbs)

Show physical or mental action:

Physical ActionsMental Actions
run (दौड़ना)think (सोचना)
eat (खाना)believe (विश्वास करना)
write (लिखना)understand (समझना)
jump (कूदना)remember (याद करना)
walk (चलना)know (जानना)

2. State Verbs (Stative Verbs)

Show a condition or state, not an action:

  • be - I am happy. (मैं खुश हूं।)
  • have - She has a car. (उसके पास कार है।)
  • seem - He seems tired. (वह थका हुआ लगता है।)
  • belong - This belongs to me. (यह मेरा है।)
  • contain - The box contains books. (बॉक्स में किताबें हैं।)

3. Helping Verbs (Auxiliary Verbs)

Help the main verb to form tenses, questions, or negatives:

  • Primary: be (am, is, are, was, were), have (has, had), do (does, did)
  • Modal: can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must

Example: She is reading. / I can swim.
