Regular & Irregular Verbs

Understand the difference between regular verbs (add -ed) and irregular verbs (change form) with common examples.

Regular vs Irregular Verbs

In English, verbs change form to show past tense. Regular verbs follow a simple pattern (add -ed), while irregular verbs change in unpredictable ways.

Regular Verbs

Regular verbs add -ed to form past tense and past participle:

Rules for Adding -ed:

  • Most verbs: add -ed → play → played
  • Verbs ending in -e: add -d → love → loved
  • Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to i, add -ed → study → studied
  • Short verbs (CVC): double the last consonant → stop → stopped
