The 8 Parts of Speech

Every word in English belongs to a category called "part of speech." There are 8 parts of speech that help us understand how words work in sentences.

1. Noun (संज्ञा / સંજ્ઞા)

A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

  • Person: teacher, doctor, Mary
  • Place: school, city, India
  • Thing: book, table, computer
  • Idea: love, happiness, freedom

2. Pronoun (सर्वनाम / સર્વનામ)

A pronoun replaces a noun.

  • I, you, he, she, it, we, they
  • me, him, her, us, them
  • my, your, his, her, our, their

3. Verb (क्रिया / ક્રિયા)

A verb shows action or state of being.

  • Action: run, eat, write, play
  • State: is, are, was, were, am

4. Adjective (विशेषण / વિશેષણ)

An adjective describes a noun.

  • big, small, beautiful, red, happy
  • Example: The tall man has a red car.

5. Adverb (क्रियाविशेषण / ક્રિયાવિશેષણ)

An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

  • quickly, slowly, very, really, always
  • Example: She runs quickly. He is very tall.

6. Preposition (पूर्वसर्ग / પૂર્વસર્ગ)

A preposition shows relationship between words.

  • in, on, at, to, from, with, by, for
  • Example: The book is on the table.

7. Conjunction (संयोजक / સંયોજક)

A conjunction connects words or sentences.

  • and, but, or, because, so, if, when
  • Example: I like tea and coffee.

8. Interjection (विस्मयादिबोधक / વિસ્મયાદિબોધક)

An interjection shows emotion.

  • Oh! Wow! Oops! Hey! Hurray!
  • Example: Wow! That's amazing!
