Articles (a, an, the)

Master the use of articles (a, an, the) - small words that make a big difference in English.

What are Articles?

Articles are small words used before nouns. English has 3 articles: a, an, and the. They help us know if we're talking about something specific or general.

Indefinite Articles: A and An

Use "a" and "an" for non-specific, general things (first time mentioned).

A - Before consonant sounds:

  • a book, a cat, a dog, a university (sounds like "yoo")

An - Before vowel sounds:

  • an apple, an egg, an umbrella, an hour (silent "h")

Rule: Listen to the SOUND, not the letter!

  • a university (sounds like "yoo") ✓
  • an hour (silent h, sounds like "our") ✓
  • a house (h is pronounced) ✓

Definite Article: The

Use "the" for specific things (both speaker and listener know what we mean).

Use "the" when:

  • Something is mentioned again: "I saw a dog. The dog was brown."
  • There's only one: the sun, the moon, the sky
  • It's clear which one: "Close the door." (the door in this room)
  • With superlatives: the best, the biggest, the most beautiful

When NOT to Use Articles

  • General plurals: "Dogs are friendly." (NOT: The dogs are friendly - in general)
  • Uncountable in general: "Water is important." (NOT: The water is important)
  • Names: India, John, Monday
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Languages: English, Hindi, Gujarati
