The English alphabet is the foundation of reading and writing in English. It consists of 26 letters that form every word in the English language. Mastering the alphabet is your first step toward English fluency!

The 26 Letters

The English alphabet has both uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters:

Vowels (5 Letters)

Vowels are special letters that represent open sounds. There are 5 vowels in English:

Consonants (21 Letters)

Consonants are letters that represent sounds made by blocking air flow. There are 21 consonants:

B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z

Note: The letter "Y" can sometimes act as a vowel (like in "gym" or "happy").
