Modal Verbs

Modal verbs are auxiliary (helping) verbs that express ability, possibility, permission, obligation, or advice. They are followed by the base form of a verb (without "to").

Common modals: can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must

Modal Verbs and Their Uses

1. CAN / COULD (Ability & Possibility)

  • Ability: I can swim. / I could swim when I was 5.
  • Permission: Can I use your phone?
  • Possibility: It could rain tomorrow.
  • Polite request: Could you help me, please?

2. MAY / MIGHT (Permission & Possibility)

  • Permission (formal): May I come in?
  • Possibility: She may be late. / It might rain.
  • Wish: May you live long!

3. WILL / WOULD (Future & Requests)

  • Future: I will call you tomorrow.
  • Polite request: Would you open the door?
  • Past habit: He would always help others.
  • Conditional: I would go if I had time.

4. SHALL / SHOULD (Suggestions & Advice)

  • Suggestion: Shall we go? / Shall I help you?
  • Advice: You should study hard.
  • Expectation: He should arrive soon.

5. MUST / HAVE TO (Obligation)

  • Strong obligation: You must wear a seatbelt.
  • Logical conclusion: He must be tired after the journey.
  • External obligation: I have to work tomorrow.

6. NEED (Necessity)

  • You needn't worry. (no necessity)
  • You need to study more. (necessity)
